Car Sales Tax Calculator by State
Estimate sales or use tax on a US vehicle purchase. Local rates are averages, so verify your final amount with your state or local motor vehicle agency.
How the estimate works
The calculator multiplies the estimated taxable purchase amount by the selected state rate. If you include local tax, it also adds the listed average local rate. Actual rates and trade-in credits can depend on your address, purchase type, vehicle value, and state-specific rules.
Before you rely on the result
- Confirm whether your state taxes the purchase price, assessed value, or another amount.
- Check whether your trade-in receives a full, partial, or no tax credit.
- Add title, registration, inspection, documentation, and other fees separately.
Methodology: public state revenue and motor vehicle guidance, supplemented by published state and average local rates. Rates can change. Last reviewed July 2026.
